Following a structural collapse in a China gym, three people have been feared dead, leaving one injured. The incident on Tuesday in Heilongjiang province in Northeast China had seven people in the gym present when it collapsed.
According to Global Times, the Yuecheng Fitness Gymnasium in Jiamusi City, Huanan County, which collapsed, was a youth basketball arena used as a training ground. Video images are circulating on social media showing the collapsed gymnasium caved in, covered by snow. In a video from the Shanghai news outlet The Paper, which the government runs, a woman can be seen at the collapse site crying about her son still being trapped in the rubble. Officials have concluded rescue operations of the incident, which happened at 7:20 p.m. on Monday night.
According to a statement by the county government, the collapsed gymnasium belongs to the New Sunshine Fitness Club in Huanan County. However, following the incident, the gymnasium owners could not be reached.
While the cause of the collapse is still being investigated, officials have successfully detained the person in charge of the gym. There are speculations that the blizzard that has rocked China’s northernmost province is to blame. Throughout Monday, the northeastern province of the country has suffered a harsh and brutal blizzard, causing schools to shut down and movements to halt.
